The broad goal of the teaching of undergraduate student in Pathology is to provide the students with a comprehensive knowledge of the mechanisms and causes of disease, in order to enable him/her to achieve complete understanding of the natural history and clinical manifestations of disease.
(i) KNOWLEDGE
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
(1) describe the structure and ultrastructure of a sick cell, mechanisms of cell degeneration, cell death and repair and be able to correlate structural and functional alterations.
(2) explain the pathophysiological processes which govern the maintenance of homeostasis, mechanisms of their disturbance and the morphological and clinical manifestations associated with it
(3) describe the mechanisms and patterns to tissue response to injury such that she/he can appreciate the pathophysiology of disease processes and their clinical manifestations
(4) correlate normal and altered morphology (gross and microscopic) of different organ systems in common diseases to the extent needed for understanding of disease processes and their clinical significance.
(ii) SKILLS
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
(1) describe the rationale and principles of technical procedures of the diagnostic laboratory tests and interpretation of the results.
(2) perform simple bedside tests on blood, urine and other biological fluid samples.
(3) draw a rational scheme of investigations aimed at diagnosing and managing the cases of common disorders.
(4) understand biochemical/physiological disturbances that occur as a result of disease in collaboration with pre-clinical departments.
(iii) INTEGRATION
At the end of training, he/she should be able to integrate the causes of disease and relationship of different etiological factors (social, economic and environmental) that contribute to the natural history of diseases most prevalent in India.

We have adequate doctors and non-teaching technical staff in our department.
It functions 24x7.
We regularly hold blood donation camps in and around our Bhuj city.It has a counsellor named Mr. Darshan Rawal who can be contacted from 9am to 5pm for scheduling of Blood donation camps (Mob no. 9173456393) as a community service.
We have all necessary equipments for processing, testing, and storage of blood and its products.
It has an adjoining well-equipped blood components' separation room as well.
Opd Sample collection room (Opd room no. 60): Blood collection room for blood and urine samples.
It runs its course from 9 am to the end of opd hours in basement of hospital building.
It has a billing counter for lab tests with adequate staff.
It also has a separate cabin for dispatching the OPD based lab reports.
IPD collection room of GAIMS Central lab on the first floor of Hospital building: It functions 24X7. Herein all sample collections are assembled from opd or wards/ICUs and then sent for testing in adjoining rooms.
In this room, apart from barcoding samples, segregation of samples is done based on tests that are advised.
Also, urine processing, blood grouping and peripheral smear preparations are done here.
IPD lab reports are printed from this room.
It functions 24X7.
It deals with testing of Complete Blood count (CBC) blood samples. One 5-part and one 7-part advanced Sysmex machine are available for testing.
HPLC machine (Biorad D10) is available for processing EDTA blood samples for Hemoglobinopathies like Sickle Cell disease and Thalassemia.
Even HbA1c testing is done on Biorad machine.
It has Reporting table with all advanced Compound microscopes.
The reporting of all Hematology slides/cases are done here, and it’s done 24×7.
Reporting of Cytopathology and Histopathology slides / cases are done here from 9am to 7pm.
Cytology procedural room (GAIMS central lab): It functions from 9am to 5pm.
It has all the facilities and reagents for performing the FNAC (non-guided) procedures.
For Guided FNAC procedures, we reply on Radiology department for the same.
Histo/cytopathology processing room (GAIMS central lab): It functions from 9am to 6pm.
All surgical specimens for Histopathology reporting are received.
We have most of the special stains available for easing out Histopathology reporting.
It has a partitioned, well equipped Grossing station and abundant storage space for specimen after grossing procedure.
Cytopathology and Histopathology processing room is equipped with all requisite machines and manpower.
It has abundant storage space with laboratory indented material.
It deals with ALL lab storage irrespective of departments.
It has cabinets for storage of filed blocks and slides in specialized cabinets for easy retrieval when needed.
Autoclave room (Common) at GAIMS central lab. It deals with autoclave/sterilization process of entire lab waste before discarding process as per BMW guidelines.
Pathology Museum: Visit time from 9am to 5 pm. Present at college side in Pathology department.
It has numerous varieties of specimens mounted in a room with printed catalogue for both MBBS and PG students.
The pathology department is a 'regular' part of Clinico-pathological meetings (CPC) : Held monthly. It's mainly held at Hospital conference room.
Follow turnaround time (TAT) for testing samples in Pathology lab.
Updated Pathological data - maintained as per latest NMC and NABH guidelines.
GAIMS central lab / Blood bank in charges and co-in charges are ALL Pathologists.
Regular safety check audits of Lab staff.
Collaboration with Quality department for NABH's Pathology data.
MBBS Teaching as per NMC and Kachchh university guidelines. Logbooks, Journals and OSPE sets are available for teaching.
DMLT Teaching as per university guidelines.
MD Pathology teaching as per NMC and Kachchh university guidelines.
Research and poster/oral paper presentation by MD students and/or faculties.
One Pathology professor is a part of Curriculum committee in GAIMS.
