The RNTCP has been successful in achieving significant reductions in TB prevalence and mortality rates.
In 2020, the RNTCP was rebranded as the National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP), aligning with India's goal of eliminating TB by 2025.
Key components of the RNTCP include:
DOTS Strategy: The program adopted the Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course (DOTS) strategy, which is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the most effective way to treat TB. It involves five key elements:
Case detection through quality-assured bacteriology
Standardized treatment regimen
A regular, uninterrupted supply of quality-assured drugs
A standardized recording and reporting system
Free Diagnosis and Treatment: The RNTCP provides free diagnosis and treatment to all TB patients, including those with drug-resistant TB.
Expansion of Diagnostic Services
Focus on Drug-Resistant TB
Community Engagement and Awareness: The program emphasizes community involvement and awareness to reduce the stigma associated with TB and encourage early diagnosis and treatment.
