Diagnostic Imaging

X-Ray

X-rays are a type of radiation called electromagnetic waves. X-ray imaging creates pictures of the inside of your body. The images show the parts of your body in different shades of black and white. This is because different tissues absorb different amounts of radiation.

X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation like radio waves, microwaves, visible light and gamma rays. X-ray photons are highly energetic and have enough energy to break up molecules and hence damage living cells.

X-rays are most used to look at bones and joints, but providers can use them to quickly diagnose other conditions, like lung infections, too.

Machine availability in GAIMS:
  • X-ray machine 500 mA with single tube with vertical Bucky.
  • X -ray machine 500 mA with double tubes with IITV 8- vertical Bucky with digital services.
  • X-ray machine 300 mA with vertical Bucky.
  • Portable X-Ray 60 mA Services in Hospital for portable X-rays in ICU, OT and wards.
Study availability at GAIMS
  • Plain X-ray
  • Barium Swallow
  • Barium Enema/ Meal/ Follow Through
  • Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)
  • Retro Grade Urethrogram (RGU)
  • Micturating cystourethrogram (MCU)
  • Sinogram
  • Hysterosalpingography (HSG)
  • Portable X-ray for IPD patients.

CT Scan

  • A computed tomography scan is a medical imaging technique used to obtain detailed internal images of the body.
  • CT Machine pictures are taken from different angles and are used to create 3-dimensional (3-D) views of tissues and organs.
  • A dye/contrast may be injected into a vein or swallowed to help the tissues and organs show up more clearly.
  • A CT can also be used to acquire biopsy from deeper tissues without the need to operate for it.
Machine availability at GAIMS

128 Slice CT-SCAN machine .

Study availability at GAIMS
  • CT scan - Plain (Any Study)
  • CT scan - Contrast (Any Study)
  • CT Angiography (Any Study)
  • CT Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)
  • CT Abdomen Single/ Multi Phase
  • CT Guided Biopsy
  • CT Sinogram
  • CT Liver Triphasic
CT Guided Procedures at GAIMS:
  • CT guided procedures are biopsies and aspirations.
  • Along with the radiologist a technologist from radiology dept also participates in these procedures.
  • A nurse will be present as an assistant during the procedure.
  • Informed Consent is obtained before starting the procedure.
Contrast Procedures available at GAIMS:
  • For all contrast studies: Test dose is given 2 ml intravenously and monitored for 10 minutes then test is carried out.
  • Informed consent should be checked before giving test dose.
  • Informed consent should be taken after confirming Serum creatinine value.
Contrast is given to the patient by three methods
  • Oral Contrast
  • Rectal Contrast
  • Intravenous Contrast

MRI

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging is non-radiation technique for better assessment of soft tissues of the body.
  • It has better contrast resolution for soft tissues of the body and helps to characterize the pathologies better.
  • MRI can also be done with or without contrast. Routinely, used for pathologies of brain, spinal spondylosis, ligamentous injuries of joints.
Equipment and studies:
  • 1.5 Tesla MRI machine
Study availability
  • MRI Scan – Plain (Any Study)
  • MRI Scan - Contrast (Any Study)
  • MRI Angiography
  • MRI Venography
  • MRI Spectroscopy

Ultrasound

  • Ultrasound imaging (sonography) uses high-frequency sound waves to view inside the body. Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can also show movement of the body's internal organs as well as blood flowing through the blood vessels.
  • It involves sending ultrasonic waves to various organs (like brain, liver, kidneys) in the body and looking at the reflected or transmitted waves. Using ultrasonography, stones in gallbladder and kidneys or tumors in different organs can be detected.
  • USG checks your baby's heartbeat, muscle tone, movement and overall development. It helps to see if you're pregnant with twins, triplets or more (also called multiples) and to check if your baby is in the heads-first position before birth. To examine your ovaries and uterus (womb).
Machine availability in GAIMS
  • USG machines (4) with high frequency linear and TVS, Convex and Echo probe.
  • Portable USG Machine (2): Linear and Convex probe.
Study availability
  • Ultrasonography Routine
  • USG abdomen/neonatal skull
  • USG Antenatal care
  • USG guided Biopsy
  • USG guided Pleural Tapping.
  • USG guided Ascetic Tapping
  • USG guided Rupture of Foley's Bulb
  • USG guided FNAC

Color Doppler

  • A Doppler test is used to detect blood flow. It shows whether a pulse is present and whether there is blood flow through your blood vessels to a limb.
  • It can diagnose or help to manage conditions such as peripheral arterial disease (PAD) or diabetic foot ulcer.
  • It shows the direction and speed of blood moving through arteries and veins.
Study availability at GAIMS
  • Abdominal Doppler
  • Carotid Doppler
  • Obstetrics Doppler
  • Peripheral Arterial
  • Peripheral Venous
  • Portal doppler
  • Renal Doppler
  • Temporal Artery Doppler
  • Scrotal Doppler

Mammography

Mammography is a dedicated radiographic technique for imaging the breast, and the resultant images are known as mammograms.

Mammography is the best tool we have to find breast cancers early i.e. before they are palpable.

Types of mammography

In general terms, there are two types of mammography

  • Screening
  • Diagnostic
